Mulch Calculator

This mulch calculator finds how much mulch you need from the bed area and the depth. Enter them and the mulch calculator returns the volume in cubic meters, cubic yards, and bags. As a mulch estimator it answers how much mulch you need for a garden bed, border, or playground in one step.

What the mulch calculator shows

Mulch is sold by volume, so the mulch calculator turns the area of your beds and the depth you want into a volume. It reports cubic meters, cubic yards for a bulk order, and the number of bags for a bagged order. Whether you run it as a mulch estimator, a mulch coverage calculator, or a mulch bag calculator, it answers the same question: how much mulch you need.

How to calculate how much mulch you need

To calculate how much mulch you need, multiply the area by the depth for a volume, then convert to yards or bags:

Volume (m³) = Length × Width × (Depth ÷ 1000)
Cubic yards = Volume ÷ 0.7646

One cubic yard of mulch is about 764 liters, so the mulch calculator divides the volume by the bag size for the bag count. Depth is the lever: doubling the depth doubles the mulch, which is why a mulch square footage calculator always asks how deep you want the layer.

Mulch calculator yards example

A bed 10 m by 5 m at a 75 mm depth. The mulch calculator yards result is:

Volume = 10 × 5 × 0.075 = 3.75 m³ = 4.9 cubic yards

At 50 liters a bag that is about 75 bags. Enter your own beds and the mulch calculator updates the yards and bags at once.

How to use the mulch estimator

Enter the bed length and width in meters, the mulch depth in millimeters, and the bag size, then the mulch estimator returns the volume and the bag count. A 50 to 75 mm layer, about 2 to 3 inches, suits most beds. To calculate how much mulch you need for several beds, add their areas first, or run each bed and total the results.

Reading the mulch calculator result

Order bulk mulch by the cubic yard and bagged mulch by the bag; both already include your chosen depth. Round up a little, since beds are rarely perfect rectangles and mulch settles. Deeper is not always better: 50 to 75 mm suppresses weeds and holds moisture, while much more can starve roots of air. The mulch calculator gives the amount for the depth you set, so adjust the depth rather than guessing the total.

When to use the mulch estimator

  • Topping garden beds and borders with the mulch estimator
  • Working out how many bags of mulch you need for a bagged order
  • Sizing a bulk delivery with a mulch calculator cubic yards result
  • Covering a playground to a safety depth

Common mulch calculator mistakes

  • Guessing the area. Break odd beds into rectangles and add them before you calculate mulch needed.
  • Ignoring depth. A mulch calculator square feet figure means nothing without the depth; deeper needs more.
  • Piling it too deep. More than 3 to 4 inches can smother roots, so do not over order.

Tips for buying mulch

  • Aim for a 2 to 3 inch layer for weeds and moisture.
  • Buy bulk by the yard once you pass eight to ten bags.
  • Total all beds and convert once to avoid over ordering.

How much mulch do I need by area and depth

Every mulch order comes down to two numbers, area and depth, and getting the area right is where people slip. Measure each bed as length times width, break curved or L shaped beds into rectangles, and add them before you divide. A mulch calculator square feet result is only as good as that area. Depth then scales the volume directly, so the same bed at 3 inches needs half again what it needs at 2 inches. To figure out how much mulch you need for a big yard, total all the beds first, then convert once; running each bed separately and rounding each up wastes material. Bulk mulch is cheaper per yard than bags once you pass about eight to ten bags, so a mulch calculator by yard helps you decide which to buy.

Mulch bag calculator and cubic yards

A mulch bag calculator and a mulch calculator cubic yards result answer the same volume in two units. One cubic yard is about 764 liters, so a standard 50 liter bag is roughly a fifteenth of a yard, and 27 cubic feet make a yard. That is why a yard of mulch spreads over about 108 sq ft at a 3 inch depth. For a hardscape project next to the beds, the paver calculator counts the pavers for a patio or path from the same kind of area measurement. Whichever unit your supplier uses, start from the area and depth, and the mulch calculator gives the rest.

How much does a yard of mulch cover

Coverage of one cubic yard of mulch at common depths, a quick check on the mulch coverage calculator:

Mulch depthCoverage per cubic yard
1 inch (25 mm)324 sq ft
2 inches (50 mm)162 sq ft
3 inches (75 mm)108 sq ft
4 inches (100 mm)81 sq ft

Mulch Calculator FAQ

How much mulch do I need?

Multiply the bed area by the depth for a volume, then convert to yards or bags. For 50 m² at 75 mm you need about 3.75 m³, which the mulch calculator turns into yards and bags.

How many bags of mulch do I need?

Divide the volume by the bag size. A cubic yard is about 764 liters, so at 50 liters a bag that is roughly 15 bags per cubic yard.

How much does a yard of mulch cover?

About 108 sq ft at a 3 inch depth, or 162 sq ft at 2 inches. Deeper mulch covers less area per yard.

How deep should mulch be?

About 2 to 3 inches, or 50 to 75 mm, for most beds. That suppresses weeds and holds moisture without starving roots of air.
