What the balloon payment calculator does
A balloon car loan leaves part of the amount financed unpaid until the last day. Because that part is not repaid month by month, the payments are lower, but interest keeps running on it for the whole term. The balloon payment calculator discounts the balloon back to today, spreads the rest over the term, and compares the result with a loan that has no balloon.
Balloon payment formula
With L the amount financed, B the balloon, i the monthly rate, and n the months:
The term B ÷ (1 + i)n is the present value of the balloon. Only the rest is amortized. Total paid is n × Payment + B, and total interest is that total minus L.
Car loan with balloon payment example
A 40,000 car, 5,000 down, 6.5% for 60 months, with a 30% balloon of 12,000:
Total interest is 7,901.28. Without the balloon the payment would be 684.82 and the interest 6,088.91, so the balloon lowers the payment by about 170 a month but adds about 1,812 of interest.
How to use the car loan calculator with balloon
Enter the vehicle price and the money you put down, including any trade-in. Add the annual interest rate and the term in months. Enter the balloon as a percentage of the vehicle price; lenders commonly offer 20 to 40%. Press Calculate to see the monthly payment, the final lump sum, and the total cost.
Reading your balloon car loan result
The lower payment is not a discount. You still owe the balloon, and you pay interest on it for the full term. At the end you can pay the balloon in cash, refinance it, or, with some finance plans, hand the car back if the balloon matches its guaranteed value. Make sure the car is likely to be worth at least the balloon, or you will owe more than it is worth.
When to use an auto loan balloon payment calculator
- Comparing a balloon plan with a standard car loan
- Setting a balloon that keeps the payment affordable
- Planning savings for the final payment
- Checking a dealer quote
- Seeing the interest cost of a larger balloon
Common balloon loan calculator mistakes
- Comparing payments only. Compare total interest too.
- Setting a balloon above the car value. You could owe more than it is worth.
- No plan for the lump sum. Save for it or plan the trade-in.
- Ignoring mileage limits. Return plans often charge for extra miles.
Tips for a car finance balloon calculator
- Keep the balloon at or below the expected trade-in value.
- Ask for the total amount payable in writing.
- Compare the same car on a standard loan.
Balloon payment car finance vs a standard loan
In the example the balloon cuts the payment from 684.82 to 515.02, a saving of about 2,000 a year, but adds about 1,812 of interest over five years and leaves 12,000 to pay. A standard loan from the loan payment calculator ends with the car fully yours and no lump sum due. Ask the dealer for the APR too, since fees change the true cost, and check it with the APR calculator.
Residual value car finance and planning the final payment
Some plans set the balloon at a guaranteed future value, so you can return the car instead of paying. If you plan to keep the car, start saving for the balloon from day one. Saving 12,000 over 60 months at 4% takes about 181 a month, which the sinking fund calculator works out. Adding that to the balloon payment shows the real monthly budget, close to the standard loan payment.

Car Loan Calculator with Balloon Payment FAQ
How does a balloon payment work?
Part of the loan is left as one large payment at the end. Monthly payments are lower because they do not repay that part, but interest runs on it for the whole term.
How is a balloon payment calculated?
Payment = (L − B ÷ (1 + i)^n) × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)^−n). For 35,000 at 6.5% over 60 months with a 12,000 balloon, the payment is 515.02.
Is a balloon car loan a good idea?
It suits buyers who will sell or trade the car before the end, or who have a plan to pay the lump sum. It costs more interest than a standard loan.
What happens if I cannot pay the balloon?
You can usually refinance it, sell the car, or, on some plans, return it. Refinancing adds more interest.
