Acreage Calculator

This acreage calculator turns plot dimensions into acres, hectares, square feet, and square metres. Enter the length and width in metres, or enter a total area in square feet, and the acreage calculator returns the land area in every common unit. It works as an acreage converter for lots, fields, and farmland.

What the acreage calculator shows

An acre is 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square metres. The acreage calculator converts a plot into acres and the other units buyers, surveyors, and farmers use. You can figure acreage from length and width, or use it as a square foot to acreage calculator when you already know the area in square feet.

Figuring acreage from dimensions

Figuring acreage is a two-step job: find the area, then divide by the size of one acre:

Area (m²) = Length × Width
Acres = Area (m²) ÷ 4,046.86 = Area (ft²) ÷ 43,560

One hectare is 10,000 m², or 2.471 acres. The acreage calculator applies these factors so every unit stays consistent.

Lot size acreage calculator example

A plot 100 m long and 50 m wide. The lot size acreage calculator gives:

Area = 100 × 50 = 5,000 m² = 53,820 ft²
Acres = 5,000 ÷ 4,046.86 = 1.24 acres (0.5 ha)

Enter 43,560 square feet in the area box instead and the result is exactly 1 acre.

How to use the acreage converter

Enter the plot length and width in metres for a rectangular lot, or type the total area in square feet in the optional box. The acreage converter returns acres, hectares, square feet, and square metres. For an irregular lot, split it into rectangles and triangles, add their areas in square feet, and enter the total, which is how to figure out acreage for odd shapes.

Reading the acreage calculator square feet result

Acres are the standard unit for land sales in the United States, hectares in most other countries, and square feet or square metres for building lots. The acreage calculator square feet output is useful for zoning and coverage limits. Legal lot size always comes from a survey; use this tool for estimates, planning, and checking a listing.

When to figure out acreage

  • Checking a property listing with the online acreage calculator
  • Planning seed, fertiliser, or fencing for a field
  • Converting a land acres calculator figure to hectares
  • Comparing lots by size before a purchase

Common acreage calculator mistakes

  • Mixing feet and metres. Enter dimensions in metres or area in square feet, not both mixed.
  • Treating a sketch as a survey. Legal boundaries come from a surveyor.
  • Confusing acres and hectares. A hectare is about 2.47 acres.

Tips for accurate results

  • Measure along the boundary, not across corners.
  • Split irregular plots into simple shapes.
  • Check listings against the deed or survey plan.
  • To get the boundary from satellite images, measure acreage on Google Maps.
  • For acres shown directly, use Google Earth instead.

Figure out acreage for irregular land

Few plots are perfect rectangles. To figure out acreage for an odd shape, sketch the lot, divide it into rectangles and right triangles, and calculate each piece: rectangles are length times width, triangles are half the base times the height. Add the pieces in square feet and enter the total in the area box. For very irregular boundaries, survey coordinates give the most accurate area. Landscaping a large lot often follows, and the mulch calculator sizes bed coverage once the planting areas are known.

Acre of land calculator: how big is an acre?

An acre has no fixed shape, only a fixed area. A square acre is about 208.7 feet on each side, or roughly 63.6 metres. An American football field without the end zones is about 1.1 acres, which is a handy way to picture land size when using an acre of land calculator.

Acreage Calculator FAQ

How many square feet are in an acre?

43,560 square feet, which is about 4,047 square metres.

How do I convert square feet to acres?

Divide the square feet by 43,560. The square foot to acreage calculator mode does this when you enter the area directly.

How do I figure acreage for an irregular lot?

Split the lot into rectangles and triangles, add their areas, and convert the total. Triangles are half base times height.

Is an acre the same as a hectare?

No. A hectare is 10,000 m², about 2.47 acres.
